Gäelith. The Voice of the Stones

The Journey Begins: Building a World of Stones and Magic

Welcome to the first entry of my blog, where I’ll be documenting the development of my new game project: Gäelith. The Voice of the Stones. This game is a blend of puzzle-solving, ancient Celtic traditions, and magical stone manipulation. In this blog, I’ll be sharing the artistic and technical progress of the game as I build it, as well as insights into the design process. My goal is to not only showcase the development but also to use this platform as part of my curriculum vitae, as I hope it will highlight both my creative and technical skills.

The Concept

Gäelith. The Voice of the Stones is an isometric puzzle game where the player controls Gäelith, a druid who possesses the unique ability to communicate with stones. The magic of Gäelith allows him to influence the stones around him, making them behave as he desires. The game will be divided into individual “rooms”, each with its own set of challenges and puzzles that must be solved using Gäelith’s powers. To progress to the next room, players will need to use their wits and the druid’s abilities to manipulate the environment and overcome obstacles.

The setting is inspired by ancient Celtic traditions, with a focus on megalithic monuments, stones adorned with mystical runes, and an immersive, natural world full of secrets to uncover. Players will interact with these stones, each with its own characteristics, to move, activate, or change them in creative ways to solve the puzzles.

What’s in a Name?

The name of the main character is a combination of:

  • “Gäe-” prefix, which could evoke associations with “Gael,” referring to Celtic heritage or culture.
  • “Cael”, meaning “sanctuary” or “stone,” representing the connection to the game’s themes of sacred places and stones.
  • “Ith”, adding a mystical tone to evoke a sense of magic and mystery.

What to Expect from the Blog

As I continue developing the game, I’ll be sharing updates on the artistic and technical aspects, including challenges I encounter, solutions I implement, and insights I gain along the way. From coding the magic mechanics in Unity to crafting the environment and characters, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at every stage of the process.

In this first blog entry, I’m excited to share a provisional header image for the game I made with Photoshop. The header combines two images I created using Midjourney: one representing Gäelith, and the other featuring stones inscribed with ancient runes. This image is just a glimpse of the atmosphere I aim to create in the game.

Next Steps

I’m looking forward to diving deeper into the design and development in the coming weeks. Expect to see more updates, including technical breakdowns, art showcases, and perhaps a few challenges I’ll need your input on. Stay tuned, and feel free to share your thoughts or questions in the comments.

Thank you for following along with this journey!
